We would like to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to work on sea level change at the University of Cambridge for a fixed term of 12 months. They would join a collaborative project with Columbia University in the United States whose aim is to develop and apply gradient-based optimisation techniques to invert deglacial sea level records for both mantle viscosity and ice sheet history. The specific aim for this position is the application of the second-order adjoint method to allow for uncertainty quantification within the inversions, this work to be done in collaboration with PI David Al-Attar.
The successful candidate must either have, or be close to completing, a PhD in a relevant field (e.g. computational physics, geodynamics, seismology, ice dynamics). We are looking for a candidate with a strong computational background including experience in the numerical solution of partial differential equations, optimisation techniques, and parallel computing. An ideal candidate will have worked with adjoint methods previously. Prior knowledge of deglacial sea level is not required, but they must be willing to engage with this field appropriately. Applicants should have good communication skills and preferably have a track record of publication in peer-reviewed international journals.
