1) AGI GEOSCIENCE CURRENTS #10: COLLEGE GRADUATE WORKERS IN THE MINING, PETROLEUM, AND RESEARCH INDUSTRIES
Geoscience Currents #10 looks at several industries to examine the percentage of workers in those industries with their highest degree in the geosciences. Interestingly, nearly a quarter of college-educated workers in the mining industry have their highest degree in the geosciences. And even the petroleum industry, with its very diverse operational base, still has 11% of its workers with their highest degree in the geosciences.

Both titles detail the intricate balancing act today's women must perform as they juggle both their careers in academia and science with the 24/7 demands of raising children. These are challenges many of us have to face, and it is inspiring to hear how our friends and colleagues around the nation have all risen to the challenge as tell us firsthand what works and what does not. There is strength in numbers, and strength in letting our voices be heard.

Visiting Professor, Mineralogy and Petrology
Grand Valley State University
The Geology Department invites applications for a Visiting Professor position for the 2008-2009 academic year. Candidates with a Ph.D. or ABD in geoscience are preferred. Expertise in mineralogy and petrology required. Preference will be given to a creative and dynamic educator with a demonstrated commitment to effective teaching, academic experience with culturally diverse populations, and a record of active scholarship. Primary teaching responsibilities will be mineralogy and petrology courses for geology majors, introductory courses, and possibly upper-level general education theme courses. Visiting positions can be renewed up to three years.
The Geology Department at GVSU has 10 tenured/tenure-track faculty members serving 24,000 students on a campus in Allendale and a downtown campus in Grand Rapids. The department values undergraduate research for our majors (~ 55 geology and 20 earth science), field experiences, and collegial faculty-student interactions. ( www.gvsu.edu/geology)

Stratigrapher/Sedimentologist - Research Emphasis on Neogene Terrestrial Systems.
Kansas Geological Survey, University of Kansas, Lawrence.
Conduct and publish the results of fundamental and applied research in stratigraphy and sedimentology that is of national stature and relevant to Kansas. Develop both individual and cooperative research programs geared towards improved understanding of Neogene deposits in Kansas and developing a program that bridges sedimentology/stratigraphy with hydrologic issues. Serve as the coordinator of KGS County Bulletin series summarizing updated earth sciences information of general use to the State of Kansas. Active participation as a project lead mapper in the STATEMAP component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program. Support KGS efforts in the areas of technical service and communication, education, and public information. PhD degree (or expected by the time of appointment) in the earth sciences with an emphasis on stratigraphy and sedimentology. First consideration (priority) will be given to applications postmarked on or before August 1, 2008.
