The Louisiana Geological Survey at the Louisiana State University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor, Research in its Geologic Mapping and Mineral Resources section. This position focuses on the documentation, analysis, and interpretation of Cenozoic geology and geomorphology of the state. Topics of investigation include updating of stratigraphic correlations and nomenclature, studies of sedimentology and subsurface facies architecture, sedimentary petrology and provenance, structural geology, and Tertiary-Quaternary sedimentary sequences of the Lower Mississippi Embayment, Gulf Coastal Plain, and the active Mississippi Delta. Topics of economic importance concern documentation and evaluation of industrial mineral reserves, geo-environmental sensitivities, subsurface analysis of geologic carbon sequestration potential, and geologic hazards.

Field documentation and data gathering involves strenuous outdoor physical activities such as hiking, carrying heavy field equipment, operating a manual coring device, operating geophysical equipment, and collection and proper documentation of rock, sediment, and soil samples, all in an environment of densely vegetated, wet, and uneven terrain under temperatures ranging from 90 F to 40 F. Publications and geologic maps meeting USGS standards are produced using modern GIS-based software.

The position of Research Professor is a non-tenure track line with research emphasis and opportunity for rank advancement. Re-appointment is subject to satisfactory annual performance evaluations.
