RESEARCH ASSOCIATE-IN ICE CORE ANALYSIS (FIXED TERM), UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE
The Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, is seeking a Post-doctoral research associate (PDRA) in ice core analysis. The role is to add components to a CFA analysis system, and to analyse and interpret a core aimed at assessing the state of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet at the last interglacial. The programme is funded by the European Research Council and the PDRA is for 3 years. Ideally the candidate would start in June 2018.
This post is part of the WACSWAIN project which will retrieve a core to bedrock at Skytrain Ice Rise, bordering the Ronne Ice Shelf and the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. The duties of this PDRA position will include adding methane and water isotope analysis systems to an existing CFA melter setup to allow continuous high-resolution analysis of all components. The PDRA will lead the analysis of the new core and take part with colleagues in interpretation of the core. Participation in one Antarctic field season is anticipated. The post will involve laboratory work at both the Department of Earth Sciences and the British Antarctic Survey.
Applications are invited from candidates with relevant expertise in palaeoclimate and geochemistry, preferably including postgraduate work on ice cores. Expertise in ice core chemistry and continuous flow analysis systems, as well as polar field experience would be advantageous. Candidates should be able to demonstrate knowledge of issues around ice, climate and sea level in past warm periods.
The candidate will have (or be about to obtain) a PhD and preferably some postdoctoral experience in a relevant area. They will have significant experience in geochemistry and paleoclimatology, good communication skills, the ability to work in a team, good IT and data handling skills, and preferably a track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
