The Department of Geography, Geology, and the Environment at Illinois State University invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-line position in Environment and Sustainability at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The preferred starting date is August 16, 2018. A Ph.D. in Geography, Environmental Studies/Science, Sustainability, or another closely related field is required, but ABD candidates who defend their Ph.D. dissertation successfully before the time of appointment will be considered. State law mandates demonstrable oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The department seeks a candidate who will serve an integral role in a new interdisciplinary undergraduate B.S. degree program in Environmental Systems Science and Sustainability (ESSS), while also contributing to the existing undergraduate B.A./B.S. Geography program. We seek a candidate whose research and teaching take a holistic approach to the interactions between complex human and natural systems and can build upon existing departmental strengths in Environmental Science, GIScience, and/or Political Ecology. We welcome candidates from a range of specializations, and especially those with expertise in the interconnected social and environmental dimensions of one or more of the following: Agriculture, Climate, Ecosystems Management, Energy, Hazards, Population, Waste, and/or Water.
Successful candidates will have an active research agenda and maintain a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring students. Primary teaching responsibilities will include a combination of introductory and advanced courses in both ESSS and Geography, including courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. The candidate will assist the ESSS Program Director and provide leadership in the future development of the program. The candidate will be expected to maintain an externally funded and internationally visible research program. The potential for a significant startup package exists.

The Department of Geography, Geology, and the Environment currently offers B.S./B.A. degrees in Geography, a B.S. degree in Geology, and an M.S. degree in Hydrogeology.
